Strength Levels Explained: How Kyulift's F to S Ranks Work

· By Pennylume

Kyulift ranks each of your big lifts from F to S by comparing your estimated one-rep max with your bodyweight. A lift only counts once you have reached it on two separate days, every letter also needs training weeks behind it, and ranks never drop.

What does each rank compare?

Five lifts get a rank: bench press, squat, deadlift, overhead press and row. For each one, Kyulift takes your estimated one-rep max (1RM) and divides it by your bodyweight. That ratio is compared with published strength standards to give a letter from F (just starting) up to S.

Comparing against bodyweight keeps the ranks fair: a heavier lifter needs to move more weight than a lighter one for the same letter.

What is an estimated 1RM?

Your one-rep max is the heaviest weight you could lift once. You rarely test it, so apps estimate it from a normal set. A common example is the Epley formula: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30). So 80 kg for 5 reps estimates roughly 93 kg for one. Kyulift estimates it from the sets you log, so you never need to max out to see a rank.

Why does a lift need two separate days?

One great day can be a fluke: a lucky set, a light bar, a typo. Reaching the same level on two different days shows it is real, so a rank reflects what you can repeat.

What are training weeks?

A training week is a week with two or more workouts. Every letter also needs a number of them, so a rank also rewards showing up, not only lifting heavy once. Light (deload) weeks do not break your progression.

Can a rank go down?

No. Ranks never drop. A bad week, an injury or a break will not take away what you earned.

What about RIR and RPE?

They are optional ways to note how hard a set felt. RIR is reps in reserve, meaning how many more reps you could have done. RPE is the same idea on a 1 to 10 scale. They never change your targets or your ranks.
